Der damals 17-jährige Henry Fredericks soll 1959 erstmals als Taj Mahal aufgetreten sein. Unter diesem Namen wurde der aus New York stammende Sänger, Gitarrist und Pianospieler zu einen echten Blues-Giganten. 1965 gründete er mit Ry Cooder Rising Sons, 1968 startete Taj Mahal seine Solo-Karriere. Er arbeitete mit zahlreichen Größen des Rock-Business zusammen - unter anderem The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton und Willie Nelson - war häufig Gastmusiker bei anderen, holte sich ebenso oft bekannte Namen auf seine Studioproduktionen. In den Achtzigern gründete er die Hula Blues Band und ist bis heute aktiv. Musikalisch bewegte sich der Künstler im Blues, Reggae, Jazz und in der World Music. Am 17. Mai wird Taj Mahal 80 Jahre alt.
