Die Folk-Sängerin Buffy Sainte-Marie wurde am 20. Februar 80 Jahre alt. Die Indianerin vom Stamme der Cree wurde in Europa mit dem Song “Soldier Blue“ zum gleichnamigen Western bekannt (deutscher Verleihtitel: „Das Wiegenlied vom Totschlag“). In Großbritannien erreichte sie mit der Single 1971 sogar Platz sieben. Ihre höchste Platzierung in den Single-Charts der USA hatte sie ein Jahr später mit “Mister Can‘t You See“ (#21). Sainte-Marie hat eine sehr markante Stimme, die einzigartig ist und einen extrem hohen Wiedererkennungswert besitzt. Ihre Herkunft, die Historie der Indianer sowie deren Ringen um Selbstbestimmung spielte und spielt in Sainte-Maries Schaffen eine vordergründige Rolle. Musikalisch bewegte sie sich lange Zeit vornehmlich im Folk und Folk Rock, später kamen Country und weitere Rock-Elemente hinzu. Verweise auf ihre Herkunft waren in ihrer Musik immer präsent. In Great Britain, she even reached number seven with the single in 1971. She had her highest placement on the singles charts in the U.S. a year later with "Mister Can't You See" (#21). Sainte-Marie has a very distinctive voice that is unique and extremely recognizable.
