Als sie 1977 mit der Single "Substitute" die europäischen Charts durcheinanderwirbelten (unter anderem UK #2, D #1, NL #1, IRE #1) waren Clout eine reine Frauen-Band. Allein dieser Fakt war damals noch eine Seltenheit. Dass die Gruppe allerdings aus Südafrika stammte, stellte ein Novum dar. Leider blieb der Erfolg nicht erhalten - trotz starker Singleveröffentlichungen (zum Beispiel "Since You've Been Gone" von Russ Ballard oder "Let It Grow" von Eric Clapton). Erst die Pop/Rock-Cover-Version von "Save Me" (D #4, NL #6) und "Under Fire" (D #15) führte Clout 1979 noch einmal zurück in moderate Chart-Positionen. Ab 1978 holte sich die Mädchen-Clique männliche Unterstützung in ihre Reihen und spielte die zweite LP, SIX OF THE BEST, zu sechst ein (vier Frauen, zwei Männer). Das Album beinhaltet sowohl Disco-beeinflusste Nummern, als auch Rock-Songs, klang aber absolut rund und verzichtete auf Füller. Die LP ist es wert, mal wieder auf dem Plattenteller zu landen.
When they shook up the European charts in 1977 with the single "Substitute" (UK #2, GER #1, NL #1, IRE #1 among others) Clout were an all-female band. This fact alone was a rarity at the time. However, the fact that the group came from South Africa was a novelty. Unfortunately, the success did not last - despite strong single releases (for example "Since You've Been Gone" by Russ Ballard or "Let It Grow" by Eric Clapton). Only the Pop/Rock cover version of "Save Me" (GER #4, NL #6) and "Under Fire" (GER #15) led Clout back into moderate chart positions in 1979. Starting in 1978, the girl clique brought male support into their ranks and recorded their second LP, SIX OF THE BEST, with six members (four women, two men). The album included Disco-influenced numbers as well as Rock songs, but sounded absolutely round and did without fillers. The LP is worth to end up on the turntable again.
