Sie war in den Siebzigern die meist in weiß Gekleidete des Duos Baccara - Maria Mendiola. Am Sonnabend, 11. September, ist sie mit 69 Jahren verstorben. Zwischen 1977 und 1979 landeten Baccara europaweit mehrere Hits und galten neben Pink Lady aus Japan als das erfolgreichste weibliche Pop-Duo. In Spanien bei Auftritten in Diskotheken an Urlaubsorten entdeckt, kam das Duo zuerst nach Deutschland, wo es unter anderem Songs im Disco-Stil von Rolf Soja und Frank Dostal (Rattles, Wonderland) sang (“Yes Sir, I Can Boogie“, “Sorry, I’m A Lady“). Mit den beginnenden Achtzigern zogen die zwei Sängerinnen nach Großbritannien um, wo sie mit neuen Songwritern ihrer Musik eine dezente Rocknote zu verpassen suchten. 1981 trennte sich Mendiola von ihrer Partnerin. Beide traten mit eigenen Baccara-Versionen bis heute in Erscheinung.

Discovered in Spain while performing in discos at vacation resorts, the duo first came to Germany, where they sang songs of Rolf Soja and Frank Dostal (Rattles, Wonderland) in the Disco style (“Yes Sir, I Can Boogie“, “Sorry, I’m A Lady“). With the beginning of the eighties, the two singers moved to Great Britain, where they sought to add a subtle Rock note to their music with new songwriters. In 1981, Mendiola separated from her partner. Both appeared with their own versions of Baccara until today.
