Dezember Geburtstag und wird zahlreichen Quellen zufolge in diesem Jahr 80. Allerdings gibt es offizielle und durchaus populäre Publikationen, die seine Ankunft auf der Erde für 1939 oder 1940 dokumentieren.
Von 1958 bis 1972 war er Mitglied der Imperials (später Little Anthony And The Imperials), die Soul, Rythm & Blues sowie Baroque Pop gemacht haben (größte Hits “Tears On My Pillow“, 1958, US #4, “Goin‘ Out Of My Head“, 1964, US #6).
1975 stieß er zu den O‘Jays, die mit “Love Train“ 1973 nicht nur ihre eigene erste Nummer eins in den USA verbriefen konnten, sondern damit den ersten echten Disco-Song an die Spitze der US-Charts brachten (sieht man von Isaac Hayes‘ “Theme From Shaft“ 1971 mal ab). Strain sang auf 15 Alben der Vokalgruppe, bevor er sie 1992 verließ und fortan wieder mit den Imperials auf Tour ging.
