Der Organisator des legendären Woodstock-Festivals im August 1969, Michael Lang, ist mit 77 Jahren an einer seltenen Form von Blutkrebs gestorben. Langs Drei-Tage-Event in Bethel gehörte 1969 zu rund 40 weiteren Festivals in den USA mit zum Teil Hundertausenden von Besuchern, war aber das einzige, zu dem ein Dokumentarfilm gedreht und ein Album veröffentlicht wurde. Daraus resultierte am Ende der Kultstatus.
Michael Lang betätigte sich auch später als Konzert und Festival-Veranstalter (unter anderem Woodstock-Neuauflagen in den Neunzigern und 2000ern), betrieb ein Plattenlabel und produzierte Filme.
