1962 war für The Crystals ein äußerst turbulentes Jahr: Mit "Uptown" landete die Girl Group ihren ersten echten Hit (USA #13), die Nachfolge-Single "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" wurde zum Skandal und wieder vom Markt genommen, "He's A Rebel" verschaffte den Crystals die erste und einzige Nummer eins, stammte aber gar nicht von der Gruppe, sondern von den Blossoms und mit TWIST UPTOWN kam im August das erste Album heraus. Und das war entgegen gängiger Annahmen (auch heute noch) keine Hit-Ansammlung inklusive minderwertiger Füller, sondern eine Platte voll anspruchsvoller Pop-Songs, die unter der Hand von Phil Spector mit bemerkenswerten Arrangements ausgestattet worden waren.
