Mit "The Letter" hatten The Box Tops 1967 zwar ihre einzige Nummer eins in den US-Charts und mit THE LETTER/NEON RAINBOW ein Album in der Top 100 (87). Am erfolgreichsten waren sie allerdings 1968 mit der LP CRY LIKE A BABY, die sich in den Staaten auf Rang 59 einsortierte. Die dazugehörige gleichnamige Single konnte "The Letter" kommerziell sogar fast das Wasser reichen (USA #2, UK #15, D #14). Ob The Box Tops mit ihrem Debüt-Nachfolger tatsächlich am besten waren, mag jeder für sich selbst entscheiden. Stark sind die Beiträge auf dieser Platte allemal: Blue-Eyed Soul zwischen tanzbar und melancholisch mit satten Bläsersätzen, dicken Streicherteppichen und effektivem Orgeleinsatz. Zwischendurch gab es auch mal einen Dreivierteltakt mit traumhafter Melodie ("Weeping Analeah"). Herausragend auch "Fields Of Clover" oder die Box-Tops-Version von "You Keep Me Hanging On". Dazu der raue, etwas lässige Gesang von Alex Chilton. The Box Tops gehören vermutlich zu einer der unterbewertetsten Bands der 60s.

The accompanying single of the same name could even almost hold a candle to "The Letter" commercially (USA #2, UK #15, D #14). Whether The Box Tops were actually at their best with their debut follow-up, everyone may decide for themselves. The songs on this record are strong in any case: Blue-Eyed Soul between danceable and melancholic with rich brass sections, thick string carpets and effective use of organ. In between there was also a three-four time with a dreamlike melody ("Weeping Analeah"). Outstanding also "Fields Of Clover" or the Box-Tops version of "You Keep Me Hanging On". In addition the rough, somewhat casual singing of Alex Chilton. The Box Tops are probably one of the most underrated bands of the 60s.
