THE BOX TOPS: MIT DER ZWEITEN AM EROLGREICHSTEN
- Feb 01, 2023
With "The Letter", The Box Tops had their only number one in the US charts in 1967 and with THE LETTER/NEON RAINBOW an album in the Top 100 (87). However, they were most successful in 1968 with the LP CRY LIKE A BABY, which charted at #59 in the States. The accompanying single of the same name could even almost hold a candle to "The Letter" commercially (USA #2, UK #15, D #14). Whether The Box Tops were actually at their best with their debut follow-up, everyone may decide for themselves. The songs on this record are strong in any case: Blue-Eyed Soul between danceable and melancholic with rich brass sections, thick string carpets and effective use of organ. In between there was also a three-four time with a dreamlike melody ("Weeping Analeah"). Outstanding also "Fields Of Clover" or the Box-Tops version of "You Keep Me Hanging On". In addition the rough, somewhat casual singing of Alex Chilton. The Box Tops are probably one of the most underrated bands of the 60s.
