Er war einer der talentiertesten Sänger im R&B-Bereich: David Ruffin. Er starb mit nur 50 Jahren am 1. Juni 1991 an einer Überdosis Crack. Ruffin sang von 1964 bis 1968 bei The Temptations und war unter anderem die Lead-Stimme ihres Hits “My Girl“ (1964, USA #1). Nach seinem Ausstieg startete er eine Solo-Karriere, die je nach seinem drogenbedingten Gesundheitszustand mal Fahrt aufnahm oder ins Stocken geriet. Am erfolgreichsten war Ruffin mit seinem LP-Debüt 1969, MY WHOLE WORLD ENDED (USA #31), und 1975 mit dem fünften Album, WHO I AM (USA #31). 1982 beteiligte er sich an einer Temptations-Wiedervereinigung.
