SISTER GOLDEN HAIR: AMERICA-GRÜNDER GERRY BECKLEY WIRD 70 (AMERICA FOUNDER GERRY BECKLEY TURNS 70)

Als Gerry Beckley 1970 gemeinsam mit Dewey Bunnell und Dan Peek die Gruppe America gründete, kam das Trio mit dem Konzept, hinreißende Vokalharmonien mit einer Mischung aus Folk und Country Rock zu verbinden, genau zur richtigen Zeit. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young hatten gerade ihren Zenit erreicht und sich aufgelöst, Musik dieser Art war aber weiterhin enorm gefragt. Das Debüt AMERICA hatte zwar gut gemachte Songs, ließ Eigenständigkeit aber noch missen. 1972 wurde die Ende 1971 veröffentlichte Single "A Horse With No Name" ein Nummer-eins-Hit in den USA und weltweit ein Erfolg (UK #3). Obwohl das zweite Album, HOMECOMING, im November 1972 schon in die Plattenläden kam, erschien das Debüt im Dezember mit "Horse With No Name" noch einmal und erreichte in den Staaten die Spitzenposition der Album-Charts. America behielten ihren kommerziell ausgerichteten Stil bei, erreichten mit "Sister Golden Hair" 1975 noch einmal die Spitze der US-Single-Charts, hatten den nächsten großen Hit 1982 mit "You Can Do Magic" (USA #8). In Deutschland spielten America keine Rolle. Lediglich "The Last Unicorn", das Lied zum gleichnamigen Trickfilm, tauchte hierzulande 1984 in den Single-Charts auf (#38). America existiert bis heute, und Gerry Beckley, der einen Großteil der Songs schrieb (unter anderem "Sister Golden Hair"), gehört der Gruppe immer noch an. Am 12. September wird er 70 Jahre alt.

When Gerry Beckley formed America in 1970 with Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek, the trio's concept of combining ravishing vocal harmonies with a blend of Folk and Country Rock came at just the right time. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young had just reached their zenith and disbanded, but music of this type was still in enormous demand. The debut AMERICA had well-crafted songs, but still lacked originality. In 1972, the single "A Horse With No Name" released in late 1971 became a number one hit in the US and a success worldwide (UK #3). Although the second album, HOMECOMING, had already hit the record stores in November 1972, the debut was re-released in December with "Horse With No Name" as bonus reaching the top of the album charts in the States. America maintained their commercially oriented style, reached the top of the U.S. singles charts once again with "Sister Golden Hair" in 1975, had the next big hit in 1982 with "You Can Do Magic" (USA #8). In Germany America played no role. Only "The Last Unicorn", the song for the animated film of the same name, appeared in the singles charts here in 1984 (#38). America exists to this day, and Gerry Beckley, who wrote many of the songs (including "Sister Golden Hair"), is still with the group. He will be 70 years old on September 12.
