Platten sammeln ist eine Wissenschaft. Dafür sorgten allein schon die nach kommerziellen Gesichtspunkten ausgerichteten Veröffentlichungsstrategien der Plattenfirmen.
Nehmen wir den frühen David Bowie. Der hat vor seinem künstlerischen und kommerziellen Durchbruch unter anderem Baroque Pop gemacht. Dokumentiert wurde das auf seiner 67er LP DAVID BOWIE. Die ist ein nettes Zeitdokument, zum Teil aber ziemlich kitschig. 1969 folgte die nächste DAVID BOWIE. Diesmal psychedelischer und anspruchsvoller. Bereits enthalten: “Space Oddity“. Beide Platten sind hier nicht zu sehen?
Irrtum! Nach dem durchschlagenden Erfolg von THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS OF MARS (UK #5, USA #21) von 1972, wurde im selben Jahr das 69er Album gleich nochmal nachgereicht und mit einem aktuellen Bowie-Foto - übrigens von dem kürzlich verstorbenen Mick Rock aufgenommen - versehen und nach dem Hit SPACE ODDITY genannt.
Und da sich Bowie gerade verkaufte wie geschnitten Brot, verwertete Deram 1973 Bowies Debüt von 1967 gleich noch einmal als Doppel-Album, nannte dies IMAGES und packte zur Auslastung gleich noch ein paar Single-B-Seiten dazu, was Bowie-Fans in den zweifelhaften Genuss eines Unfalls wie “The Laughing Gnom“ brachte.
Und zuguterletzt ist auch Bowies Dritte, THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD (hier mit Poster), nicht „echt“. Das originale US-Cover von 1970 hatte das Comic-hafte Bild eines alten Kerls mit Landkarte unterm Arm. Die 71er UK-Version zeigte den Sänger als Mischwesen auf der Couch im Abendkleid. Diese Version hier ist von 1972 und zeigt David Bowie in seiner Rolle als Ziggy Stardust.

Mistake! After the big success of 1972's THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS OF MARS (UK #5, USA #21), the '69 album was immediately followed up in the same year with an actual Bowie photo - taken by the recently deceased Mick Rock, by the way - and named SPACE ODDITY after the hit.
And since Bowie was selling like hot cakes, Deram recycled Bowie's 1967 debut as a double album in 1973, calling it IMAGES and adding a couple of single B-sides for good measure, which gave Bowie fans the dubious pleasure of an accident like "The Laughing Gnome".
And last but not least, Bowie's third, THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD (here with poster), is not "real" either. The original 1970 US cover had the comic-book-esque image of an old guy with a map under his arm. The '71 UK version showed the singer as a hybrid on a couch in an evening gown. This version here is from 1972 and shows David Bowie in his role as Ziggy Stardust.
