Die vierte Phase von Blue Öyster Cult war die irritierendste. THE REVÖLUTION BY NIGHT (1983) veränderte die US-Band völlig: Synthie-Sounds, elektronisches Schlagzeug, New Wave, Hard Rock ... BÖC hatten sich mit FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN (1981, USA #24) und EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIVE (1982, USA #29) ganz oben gesehen. Und da wollten sie bleiben. Also mussten Erwartungshaltungen erfüllt werden. Gleichzeitig gab es eine treue Anhängerschaft aus den Siebzigern, die ganz andere Vorstellungen von der Musik ihrer Lieblingsband hatte. Ein Spagat, bei dem unwillkürlich die Hose reißen musste. Und so kam REVÖLUTION gerade mal so unter die besten 100 (#93). CLUB NINJA (1985, #63) war stilistisch klarer und orientierte sich am gängigen Glam Metal (man höre nur “Rock Not War“). Das umstrittene Konzeptalbum IMAGINOS (1988, #122) stellte einen Höhepunkt im Schaffen der Band dar. Einige wirklich große BÖC-Songs sind hier zu finden ("In the Presence of Another World“). Die LP war eine gewagte Mischung aus orchestralem Bombast, Heavy Metal, Hörspiel und Power Pop. Einzig die Produktion (extrem komprimiert) ließ zu wünschen übrig. Diese Phase wurde nicht wie gewohnt mit einem Live-Album abgeschlossen. Dafür gab es 1990 die Kompilation (die vor allem aus Live-Material bestand) CAREER OF EVIL - THE METAL YEARS.

At the same time, there was a loyal fan base from the seventies who had completely different ideas about the music of their favorite band. A balancing act. And so REVÖLUTION just barely made it into the top 100 (#93). CLUB NINJA (1985, #63) was stylistically clearer and oriented itself to the common Glam Metal (just listen to "Rock Not War"). The controversial concept album IMAGINOS (1988, #122) represented a high point in the band's output. Some of really great BÖC songs can be found here ("In the Presence of Another World"). The LP was a daring mixture of orchestral bombast, Heavy Metal, radio play and Power Pop. Only the production (extremely compressed) left much to be desired. This phase was not concluded as usual with a live album. Instead there was the compilation (which consisted mainly of live material) CAREER OF EVIL - THE METAL YEARS in 1990.
