John Lees, Sänger und Gitarrist, gehörte 1966 zur Gründungsformation der The Blues Keepers, aus denen schon ein Jahr später Barclay James Harvest wurde. Die Briten erspielten sich Anfang der Siebziger einen guten Ruf unter Progressive-Rock-Fans, glänzten allerdings von Anfang an immer wieder mit melancholischen Hymnen. Diese wurden ab Mitte der Siebziger im Schaffen von BJH dominanter, was der Gruppe bald das Etikett der Soft-Rocker einbrachte. Ab GONE TO EARTH (1978 #10) waren bis 1990 von den sich anschließenden sieben Alben allein sechs in Deutschland in den Top 10 zu finden. In keinem anderen Land konnten Barclay James Harvest solche Erfolge aufweisen. John Lees war Co-Leadsänger und blieb in der Band bis zu deren Trennung 1998. Seither betreibt er das Unternehmen John Lees‘ Barcley James Harvest. Lees ist am 13. Januar 75 Jahre alt geworden.
